Begründung

The Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Basel founded in 1460 hereby confers all the dignity, rights and privileges of an honorary doctorate in economics upon Professor Margaret Emily Slade from Canada

for her outstanding scientific achievements in the field of industrial organization as a pioneer in linking theory and empirics in the analysis of firms and markets;

for her success in deriving differentiated policy recommendations based on well-founded research, with special emphasis on resource and energy markets and retail trade;

for her exemplary role in integrating business and economics, in combining empirical methodological competence with theoretical rigor, and in linking scientific quality to practical relevance – all goals to which our faculty strives.

Margaret E. Slade (amerikanisch-kanadische Doppelbürgerin) schloss ihr Mathematik-Studium mit einem BA-Abschluss am Vassar College und einen Master-Abschluss an der University of California, Berkeley, ab. Sie arbeitete als Mathematikerin für Shell Development in Kalifornien, das Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in Neuseeland und das US Geological Survey in Kalifornien und Washington, D.C., bevor sie an der George Washington University in Wirtschaftswissenschaften promovierte. Sie unterrichtete anschliessend als Assistant, Associate und Full Professor an der Vancouver School of Economics, University of British Columbia. Von 2002 bis 2008 hatte sie an der University of Warwick die erste Leverhulme Professorship in Industrial Economics inne, bevor sie an die Vancouver School of Economics zurückkehrte.
Margaret E. Slade erhielt 1993 den Killiam Research Prize und 2001 die Ehrendoktorwürde der Helsinki School of Economics. Sie war von 2001-2003 Präsidentin der European Association for Research in Industrial Economics und von 2004 bis 2008 Mitglied im Council der Royal Economic Society. 2014 wurde sie zum Fellow der Canadian Economics Association und 2020 zum Fellow der Econometric Society ernannt.
