A new building for the Department of Sport, Exercise, and Health (DSBG)
The new facility in the St. Jakob district provides state-of-the-art infrastructure for education and research in sports science, sports medicine, and training science.
Nestled between the St. Jakobshalle and the St. Jakobsarena, the DSBG’s new building blends seamlessly into the diverse sports complexes of the Brüglinger Ebene. Opened in November 2021, it stands as the first university building within the canton of Basel-Countryside. The design, a collaborative creation of architects Caesar Zumthor, Markus Stern, and Marco Zürn, was chosen as the winning entry in a 2015 competition.
The University of Basel spearheaded the project with support from the Basel-City Building Department, realized on property located within the municipality of Münchenstein in Basel-Countryside. Costing some 51 million Swiss francs, the building accommodates about 600 students and 100 staff members. It features a large lecture hall and seminar rooms on the ground floor; specialized laboratory and patient care spaces, as well as cardio-strength rooms on the first floor; and staff areas on the second floor. The sports complex also includes a spacious triple gymnasium, available for university sports and external clubs to use in the evenings.
