The Faculty of Science of the University of Basel founded in 1460 hereby confers all the dignity, rights and privileges of an honorary doctorate in philosophy upon Professor Kelly Chibale from Zambia

who grew up in the humblest circumstances, worked his way up to become a world-renowned chemist and founder of the Holistic Drug Discovery and Development Center (H3D) in CapeTown;

who has inspired countless students and has a special talent for building scientific partnerships and fostering productive networks;

who has made a significant contribution to the development and impact of the life sciences cluster in Basel through his deep commitment on the scientific advisory board of the SwissTropical and Public Health Institute and in the Next Generation Scientist program of Novartis and the University of Basel.

Kelly Chibale (geb. 1964, Muwele, Sambia) studierte Chemie an der University of Zambia und schloss sein Studium dort 1987 mit dem B.Sc. ab. 1994 schloss er als Livingstone Trust Scholar seinen PhD an der Universität Liverpool ab. Ab 1996 arbeitete er als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der University of Capetown, ab 2007 als Professor und seit 2009 als Life Fellow dieser Universität. Er hat zahlreiche Auszeichnungen erhalten, wurde 2009 zum Fellow der Royal Society of South Africa gewählt, gründete 2010 das erste Zentrum für Arzneimittelforschung (H3D) in Afrika und hat seit 2019 den Neville-Isdell-Lehrstuhl für afrikanische Arzneimittelforschung inne. 2014 wurde er zum Fellow der Royal Society of Chemistry gewählt, die ihn 2016 als eines der 175 Gesichter der Chemie auszeichnete, er erhielt 2018 die Goldmedaille des South African Chemical Institute, wurde 2019 als einer der 100 einflussreichsten Afrikaner gewählt und  2020 und 2021 als einer der 60 einflussreichsten und inspirierendsten Führungskräfte der Pharmaindustrie weltweit gelistet.
